Inherited Memory

She was married when she was fourteen – Amazonian figure that she had –
to her middle aged uncle
As property
For property

And, often, in the night,
she must have looked to the river
with her back turned.
Because I have drawn her over the years
As a silhouette slipping through
the fingers of prismatic moonlight
Over a horizon that is wave upon wave
Ocean Deep
